This new Loop Classic reel is akin to an old classic car with a modern turbo charged engine. Hidden beneath the classic shell there lies an incredible braking system. This is the same waterproof power matrix system used on the Evotec G3 series constructed from anodized aluminium and stainless steel. Another drag feature that puts this apart from other offerings is the pronounced “click” when line is taken off the reel, love it or hate it, it does sound great with a fish on.

The reel frame and foot are very solid and well machined with no rough edges or crevices where the line could catch. Tolerances on spool fit are excellent with no noticeable spool wobble or off centre rotation. The cage and reel foot are finished in a clear anodized salt tolerant coating. The back of the cage and the front of the spool are in a handsome black gloss with stainless steel screws secured with loc-tite. The backplate has a good-sized drag knob with a decent knurled grip around the outside made from anodized aluminium. The front of the spool has a gentle  “S” shaped handle not unlike the Hardy Bros “Cascapedia”, another classic. The winding handle is a smooth tapered cylinder so there is not a likelihood of the line trapping on it. A neat counterbalance opposite has a groove with an O-ring to hold the leader when not fishing.

Weighing in at 358gms the 810 size balances nicely with most 14’-15’ double handers. This reel must be ordered in left or right hand wind is supplied with an allen key to fine tune the drag. Each reel is individually numbered on the backplate and comes in a handcrafted dark brown leather case.

I do think Loops quoted figure of 220yds + 30lb backing must be based on gel-spun. With its old world “classic” looks and ultra-modern braking system, you will get the best of both worlds. Loop call this “tradition with attitude.”
