This multi-tip Spey line designed by Eion Fairgrieve, follows the Loop idea of smooth factory welded loops to join the sections together. These first appeared on the adapted shooting heads and enable the line to slide easily through the guides without snagging, very important when playing a hefty fish. These hinge-free connecting loops are colour coded to save confusion if you carry more than one reel/line.
WF9 Orange Head + Tip 51’ 575 grain
WF10 Blue Head + Tip 53.5’ 615 grain
WF11 Purple Head + Tip 54.5’ 690 grain
The main floating running and belly sections of the line are pale ivory. Four interchangeable tips are included in a handy ventilated pocket wallet. These are floating (ivory), intermediate (clear), fast sink (green/brown) and finally extra fast sink (black).
The overall finish of the line was very good, built on a low stretch core with a smooth flexible non-crack coating.
Performance
This WF 9/10 quattro tip spey line was tested on a Loop Classic 14’ 9/10 double hander. I tried it first with the 14’ floating tip and about 15 yards of line from the tip ring. This overhead cast very easily with a simple lift, pause and forward cast. A single spey could also be performed with only a little more effort. Leader turnover in both cases was effortless and the line lay nice and straight on the water.
Changing the floating tip for the 14’ extra superfast sink made very little difference to the casting ability. There was no hinging that can sometimes happen at the joint of the two sections, particularly between the floating belly and the extra fast sink tip. The extra fast sink tip landed very smoothly on the water with no heavy splashdown. All of the tips have factory welded loops at their rear ends with plain ends to attach leader material to.
Multi-tip lines may seem expensive, but keep in mind that cost savings can be made by not having to have extra spools and three other lines with you. Not only a cost saving but also a saving on weight and bulk if you are a destination fisherman.
