The Russian Government has joined forces with the NASF Salmon Coalition in warning the Norwegian authorities that they need to change their current wild Atlantic salmon policies.
The letter, signed by Mr. Andrey Krayniy, Head of the State Committee for Fisheries of the Russian Federation, expresses deep concern at the impact of the Norwegian net fishery and says its effects are particularly serious in view of the low state of salmon stocks in the North Atlantic in recent years.
The volume of salmon caught by the nets in Finmark is of special concern as new regulations for 2008 – 2012 will soon to be announced. The recommendations of Norway’s fishery officials are currently under review by the Norwegian Government. In line with the NASF international Coalition, Russia strongly urges the Norway to undertake measures that effectively reduce the coastal fishery. Mr Krayniy’s letter also cites Norway’s obligations under the international Law of the Sea Treaty.
“We are delighted at this support from Russia” said Orri Vigfússon, NASF Chairman, “It is high time the Norwegian Government realised the damage its netting is doing to rivers along the coast of Russia, Sweden and to Norway itself and remedied its failure to cooperate with the salmon fraternity around the North Atlantic.”
NASF is an international coalition of volunteers that works towards the conservation and restoration of wild salmon stocks on both sides of the Atlantic . For more information please contact Orri Vigfússon +354 893 3553 or by e-mail: nasf@vortex.is
