Orri Vigfússon at the TransAtlantic Climate Conference

Orri Vigfusson of the North Atlantic Salmon FundOne more name is added to the list of speakers at the TransAtlantic Climate Conference in The Nordic House on April 7th and 8th. It’s the Icelandic businessman Orri Vigfússon, who became famous when he bought out fishing rights of commercial salmon fishers in the countries surrounding the North Atlantic in order to stop the stock from being wiped out.

Today the rivers of Iceland are filled with salmon and sports fishing has become more profitable for the Icelandic economy than commercial salmon fishing ever was. Vigfússon paved the way for a business that relies only on sustainable use of Iceland’s natural resources. He saw possibilities in a difficult situation and turned it into a business advantage, while helping save the salmon from extinction at the same time.

Such initiatives are part of what the TransAtlantic Climate Conference will highlight – namely the opportunities in the wake of the current threat to our planet, climate change. Orri Vigfusson will speak about how we can state an example and make the environment in the North Atlantic a heaven for biodiversity and sustainable development. The Conference will reveal several new promising inventions within green technology and give inspiration for new business opportunities.

Al Gore, the Nobel Prize-winning former Vice President of the United States, will be the keynote speaker and Faroese oceanographer Bogi Hansen will speak about his research on the Ocean “pump” in the North Atlantic – which impacts the currents of the entire planet.
