Following a period of informal consultation with anglers, angling bodies, netsmen and other interested parties the EA has decided to formalise consultations with the aim of introducing the following  salmon and sea trout protection measures for the start of the 2009 season.

  • Renew the current national spring salmon byelaws that give protection to early run salmon.
  • Bring in new byelaws to ban the sale of rod caught salmon and sea trout.
  • Introduce a carcass tagging scheme for net and trap caught salmon and sea trout.

There will follow now a period of formal consultation before the final legislation is put in place. Further details can be found on the Environment Agency website.
