Review by Simon Young
This is Ed Jaworowski’s fourth book. Ed has written articles for more than 20 international journals and has taken more than 100 different fresh and saltwater species on the fly. In this one volume he gathers together what he regards as the essential and innovative patterns to catch most saltwater species, including striped bass,bluefish,redfish,snook,jacks,bonefish and tarpon, plus others.
The book commences with a chapter on materials and tools, even these are photographed in great detail. Basic tying techniques and tips are covered over the next 14 pages meaning even a fly tying beginner or novice could start to tie using this book as a reference.
The next 5 chapters are each dedicated to specific flies, namely;
1/ Baitfish imitations
2/ Crab, Shrimp, Eels and Worms
3/ Topwater flies
4/ Bonefish flies
5/ Tarpon flies
The last chapter in the book is called “Fishing the flies” where there are detailed drawings of the knots and good clear photographs and descriptions of retrieve methods.
This book really is necessary for anyone planning a saltwater flyfishing vacation and wondering what flies to take. To quote Lefty Kreh - “If you are unsure about what patterns to use for fly fishing salt water, this book gives the answers. Featuring fish approved flies, razor-sharp photos. and clear tying instructions, it’s the essential tool for serious saltwater fly fishers.”
