US fly fisher reveals top tips

An experienced fly fisher from Cotter in Arkansas has revealed his top tips for reeling in the best and the biggest catches.

Speaking to the Baxter Bulletin, John Berry, who has been fishing in the area's rivers for more than 25 years, unveiled four things to "keep in mind" if you want to take up the challenge of catching a 20 ins or larger fish on a size 20 or smaller hook.

First, Mr Berry recommends that if you are using a smaller hook you need small tippets and adds that in order for these to be most effective, the knots should be dipped in water before being pulled tight.

Second, he claims that sharpening your hooks is one of the best ways to catch a big fish – especially if the hook is small. According to Mr Berry, a wide gap hook is generally more affective.

He also recommends that a softer rod is used which will not only protect the smaller tippets used but allow for more flexibility when reeling in your catch.

Finally, Mr Berry urges anyone who is going for a large fish to make sure that they carry a big net, adding: "In my 15 years of guiding, I have observed that a large number of fish are lost within ten feet of the angler when he is attempting to land it.

"I carry the biggest net I can find and have found that it allows me to land a higher percentage of trophy trout and to do it quickly."
