Terry Lawton takes a look at this book from the USA that brings together tips and tricks from a multitude of well known fly fishers.

Have you seen the Mel Brookes film, The Producers? A hilarious black comedy where the main characters produced a play of such bad taste it had the audience wide eyed and opened mouthed at first and then in uproarious laughter. Well that was me watching this DVD. For the first 15 minutes I laughed and cringed in equal measure. As it went on, and Mike having likened spey casting to  ‘making love to a difficult women ’ (and in some detail) for the second time, I laughed less and cringed a little more. I was however looking forward to the cast the cover claimed he was famous for; The ‘Fanny Puller’.

Spey casting is very difficult to learn from books alone, yet Simon in his revised second edition of Spey Casting comes the closest anybody has ever achieved to creating a classic reference book on the subject. This large-format glossy book is packed with superb photography and accompanied by clear readable text set in a very welcome large typeface. Simon talks in a straightforward easy-going voice that neither patronises nor dictates and his approach is full of thoughtful common sense.

Photographs of gamefish prey, information on the habitats and seasons the prey are most likely to be found and the photographs of the flies to imitate them will help you create, tie and fish the flies. The focus is on fly fishing for coastal gamefish in warmtemperate, sub-tropical and tropical regions.

So many fly tying books are available these days that it is sometimes hard to decide which one you really need. We try to help this process a little by filtering out for review those titles which we believe offer the right material and quality of presentation in a certain discipline.
