Further to this I've scale read 3 newly entered Usk 2SW's in the last few days, weighed 7.5, 8 and 8lb. All showed a healthy growth ring for 2007 and an almost indistinct ring for 2008 and first part of 2009. It is a very small sample and I am seeking more scales from Usk and Wye but these three fish experienced a crisis in high seas feeding in the past 15 months after a normal year in 2007. A few 3-4.5lb grilse have showed up in the catches during the last week but I'm yet to get the scales of any. I just had a report of 4 fish from an upper wye beat this week 7lb, 8lb, 10lb and 12lb. My 3 from the Wye this season have been 7,8 and 9. these are not the size of the 2SW's which normally average 11 or 12lb. I find this very concerning indeed, and am putting back all fish from every river this year, as I can't see a surplus on the spawning beds.
