Hi Fly Guy - can't claim to be an expert on this style of fishing but I've taken a few loch salmon (and a the odd sea trout) in your neck of the woods (out of Rhiconich) on a muddler fished sub-surface on days when they haven't been attacking a traditional surface wake-fly. This has been fishing the muddler as point fly on an intermediate or on a floating line but below the surface. My thoery is that the muddler head creates a 'buzz' of displaced water even if it's not creating an actual surface wake? Got to be worth a shot on an otherwise quiet day.
