A dose/response study was carried out with 2,3,7,8-TCDD in the rainbow trout during a twelve-week period. Results are presented from the first six weeks of this study. After a single i.p. administration of ~ 0[middle dot]01, 0[middle dot]05, 0[middle dot]1, 0[middle dot]5, 1[middle dot]0 and 5[middle dot]0 [mu]g/kg of this compound no effect on growth was found.
Liver enlargement only occurred with the highest dose and was found after six weeks. An increase of the spleen was observed after three and six weeks, but this effect appeared not to be dose-related. Three weeks after a dosage of 0[middle dot]5, 1[middle dot]0 and 5[middle dot]0 [mu]g/kg the EROD activity was increased and dose related. In the first six weeks of this study no relationship between EROD induction and toxicological effects could be determined.
