Estimation of optimum gill net mesh size for maximum yield in an exploited population

Yield per recruit was estimated for an exploited population of brown trout by using the Beverton-Holt yield model. The asymptotic length was estimated at 35.0 cm and the annual natural mortality rate at 0.32. The estimated yield was compared with actual catches for two different gill net mesh sizes (24 and 35 mm) over a period of 7 years. The model gave a smaller difference between the yields of these two mesh sizes than that actually observed. Nevertheless such yield models may be useful in working out harvesting strategies for brown trout.
