Current worldwide trends in the production of farmed salmon are presented and discussed in relation to historical supplies of salmon from fishery sources. A brief description is given of systems and methods of production. Diseases of current economic concern are described, including new diseases and the spread of non-endemic disease agents. The significance of these diseases for wild salmonids is discussed. The environmental impacts of waste nutrients (particulate organics, nitrogen and phosphorus) and treatment chemicals (antibiotics and the anti-louse chemical, dichlorvos), as well as the possible dangers for wild fish of salmon farm escapes, are also discussed.
