Massive floods and meltwater temper hopes for Norway's salmon season start on June 1
Most salmon anglers who go after the first, early runners - generally some of the biggest salmon of the season - on Norway's rivers from June 1 are sanguine about their prospects. It is usually a time of big water and you are searching for your fish with success generally falling to very experienced fishermen who show real persistence in the ice-cold waters.
It looks as though this season will be no different with fishing starting tomorrow, Friday 1st on rivers such as the Orkla and Gaula. But on the latter, at Gaulfossen the gauges have shown a river raging in flood at higher than 20 feet for the past six days and yet it now looks to be coming down with 14 feet registered today.
So hope springs eternal, as anglers say in Norway and elsewhere.
