On the darkest day of the year one of brightest lights to ever throw a fly was honored by Maryland officials when they renamed a section of the Gunpowder River the “Lefty Kreh Fishing Trail.” The state Board of Public Works approved the name change to pay homage to one of the Free State’s greatest sport fishing ambassadors.

Lefty’s Trail winds through Gunpowder Falls State Park to a stretch of water that’s a nationally recognized blue ribbon trout stream. Some sweet water fishermen suggest this section of the Gunpowder ranks as rite of passage for Maryland freshwater fly rodders.

In a press release Governor Martin O’Malley said “Lefty Kreh is a Maryland icon who has for decades inspired anglers across the state and around the world. We are honored to bestow this recognition as a reflection of his dedication to, and impact on, fishing and conservation.”
