Ladies raise money to beat breast cancer

The  Ladies Fishing group in the North East of England have spent the past four months introducing women and children to fishing while at the same time raising £780 for breast cancer charity Casting for Recovery UK & Ireland.

The group, run by Anne Woodcock, based in County Durham & Northumberland held a fundraiser at the Glasgow Angling Centre open weekend in March when more than 30 youngsters, aged from four onwards tied their first fly on a brooch that could be given as a Mother’s Day present.
Beginner fly fishing events for salmon and trout were organised for June with good numbers of ladies braving torrential downpours to attend both events.
The salmon day was held on the Bywell Beat of the River Tyne – the top salmon river in England. The ladies enjoyed a full day’s fishing with lunch included.

Tuition was provided from Bywell Head Ghillie Gary Hillary and his team, accompanied by AAPGAI Master in the double-handed rod Paul Little and GAIA coach Cliff Johnston.

Northumbrian Water, the leading provider of still water fishing in Northern Europe, hosted the trout taster day at Derwent Reservoir with those attending taken step by step by Ladies Fishing coaches who showed them everything they needed to know to have an enjoyable day’s trout fishing.

Ladies Fishing would like to thank Paul Devlin and his team at Glasgow Angling Centre, Lord and Lady Allendale and their ghillies, and also Don Coe and his staff at Northumbrian Water for their help and support.
Anne Woodcock said: “We hold events for all of the above disciplines and the opportunity to raise money for such an important charity for breast cancer with a pink fly on a brooch and fly fishing taster days shows what the group can achieve and how talented our coaches are.”

The group runs monthly events in the North East of England and are also involved with the coaching of Bishop Auckland and District Angling Club junior group.
