The Tug is The Drug by Chris Santella
They Say
“These thirty-seven stories take readers from leaping makos near the fairways of Torrey Pines to midnight Atlantic salmon fishing on the fabled Ponoi to encounters with very friendly mujeres on the streets of Havana . . . and even offer an unauthorised (yet unequivocal) account of Bob Dylan’s 1970s obsession with fishing.
Santella’s peripatetic lifestyle and eye for entertaining details even those that have little to do with the act of throwing flies at fish will make one look at fishing in a whole different way.”
- Delightful and entertaining short stories on the author’s fly fishing experiences
- Not a how-to fly fishing book but instead fishing tales to inspire one
- Includes stories from all over the globe – The Ponoi River, Havana and many more
- Fishing adventures from Chris Santella, author of the bestselling 50 Places to Fly Fish Before You Die
We Say
The Tug is The Drug by Chris Santella is a superbly entertaining collection of fishing tales covering the author’s fly fishing adventures at home in the USA and around the globe over the last 30 years.
As Gierach is the master of the long-form then by the same token, Santella is surely the master of the short story, displayed amply by these witty and descriptive writings for the likes of the New York Times, The Flyfish Journal and Greys Sporting Journal.
Reading this book was a bit like enjoying a fast-moving sitcom, one of those where the show is split amongst the different adventures of the whole cast coming together to form the complete episode. The first 3 chapters for example zip you from the remote Christmas Island in the Pacific, to the Deschutes river in the USA and then on to the famed Kola Peninsula in Russia via Finland. That pace is kept up throughout the book with a cast of fascinating characters, locations and experiences made larger than life by Santella’s portrayals, each one guaranteed you make you smile.
How best to sum up reading this book? Well as per one of the chapter titles about the language of fly fishing being hijacked by surfers, “It was Epic, Dude!”
