We Say
I’ve been wearing the Men’s Guidewater Pants from Patagonia on and off over the last couple of months now when fishing but I’ve also been wearing them to the office to check how comfortable they are all day. They have passed both tests easily I am glad to report.
During a day’s fishing at Arlington reservoir in East Sussex recently we endured some light showers that saw the water beeding up nicely on the water repellant material rather than soaking straight through and so keeping me dry. During heavier rain the material did show some signs of water not running off completely in places where it pooled (we were boat fishing so I was sitting) but I have to say I never actually noticed feeling damp and they dried very quickly once the rain stopped so they are perfectly good for wearing during showers I would say. Heavier persistant rain in cold climates would still require over-trousers but in warmer climes the quick drying material and also the drainage in all the pockets means you could wear them all day long and even wet wade too. They also have a sun protection factor of 50+ – more than enough for the most tropical of locations or an English summer day. I also like the “Sage Khaki” colour which is quite subdued and therefore great for stalking and blending in with the bankside vegetation.
While being made of a woven nylon material they do not generate as much rustling or other noise when walking as the nylon trousers of old which used to get quite annoying after a while. I have hardly noticed anything like that when wearing them all day and have matched them with a shirt and shoes for the Fish&Fly office where they have not looked out of place. They would make great travelling trousers I am sure or for outdoors use in general. They also seem to be quite good at resisting stains – always handy when fishing – presumably also due to the properties of the nylon material and of course creasing is also not a problem – another travel benefit.
At £69 these are equivalent in price to a top-notch pair of jeans and of equal long-wearing quality due to the quality of construction. When they finally do give out they are recyclable through Patagonia’s ‘Common Threads’ program which sees your old Patagonia clothing returned to the factory where the material is re-used to make new products rather than becoming landfill.
