The Sporting Sale: Fly Fishing History at Bonhams

Bonhams auctioneers in Edinburgh are holding a sporting sale on the 23rd May 2017 which contains several important items of fly fishing interest, crowned by a superb limited-edition cast of Miss Georgina Ballantine’s famous British record salmon of 64lb from the River Tay that has already picked up a lot of interest in the British press including The Times.

Other lots include artwork from famous artist and angler Bernard Venables, including an original oil from his Mr Crabtree series of Barcombe Mills in Sussex (where I grew up fishing – Ed), a great range of historic cane rods and brass fishing reels including items from Hardy and Farlows, and a super choice of both cased and carved fish including examples by J. Cooper & Sons and Nick Podolsky respectively. (We will bring you more information about the Podolsky fish carvings in a follow-up article coming soon on fishandfly.com).

For those of a wider sporting disposition, there are also hunting, shooting and golfing lots too along with the fly and coarse fishing items totalling 234 items in all.
